Types of Funnels in Google Analytics

- Strict funnel, and Flexible funnel
1. Strict Funnel
Suppose you have announced the launch of a new product or service on your website. Now when the product launches, you’d want to know who actually took a real interest in the service. Or you’d want to know who was REALLY excited about it. So, this is where a strict funnel comes into play. This is how a strict funnel gets executed:
Main Page > Product Page > Add to Cart > Thank You
The person has only seen your page and went straight to the check-out section. No in-between.
2. Flexible Funnel
A flexible funnel is also a good form of the funnel so much so that people are actually making a purchase. This Google analytics event tracking gives a loose hand to find and track conversions. In this form of Google Analytics funnel, a person may follow this path:
Main Page > Product Page > Reviews > Product Page > Add to Cart > Thank You

How to Create Goals and Funnels
In order to set up Google Analytics tracking to make goals, you need to follow the steps below.
PS: In Google Analytics, you’ll find that there’s something known as a View and a Goal. In one view, you can create at most 20 Goals. So, before knowing how to create Goals or starting them, make sure you group them first in a notebook.
Now, let’s get started.
- On your Google Analytics dashboard, go to the Goals section.
- Press the New Goal button.
- Now, you can activate a Template Goal which is automatically present in the Analytics or you may opt-in for a Custom Goal option.
- So, you can either go for the Template Goal option. But, you can learn it from the Analytics panel only. Hence, we’ll set up a Google Analytics Custom Goal.
- So, scroll down a bit and click on the Custom Goal option. And follow the steps that we do. With this way you can use Google Analytics Ecommerce tracking.
- After clicking on the Custom Goal button, you’ll have to give this Goal a name.
- Give it whatever name you want. So, here we want Google Analytics Tracking to track all those who went through our website and registered their email addresses. Hence, we’ll select the Destination option here.
- After this, you’ll be directed to give the page details which you want to track.
- Suppose you want to track the Thank You page after submitting the e-mail addresses. For this purpose, just copy the last or ending part of the URL and paste alongside the Equals to tab.
- Now, if you see in the bottom side of this screenshot of Google Analytics dashboard, you’ll see that there’s a Funnel option available.

- When you check the Funnel option, you can give the names of all the URLs which you want to track.
- This Google Analytics tracking helps you to understand how many people saw the page but didn’t enter their e-mail addresses or how many people entered their e-mail addresses but didn’t land on the Thank You page.
- So, all these numbers can be seen in the Google Analytics funnel option.
